Review of Draft Day (2014) by Jj G — 28 Aug 2014
Predictable? Probably.
Clichè? More than Likely.
Satisfying? For this NFL fan, I say absolutely.
A movie almost 100% dedicated to it's namesake, the NFL Draft Day, it feeds the fantasy geek and Bronco nut inside me like few other sports movies have. Sure, the movie still has it's hero in Costner, but he wins in ways that haven't been seen before in this genre and really shows some growth in the process.
The love story seemed to be tacked on for the females who were dragged along, and the family history was a but uninspired although it did add a bit of depth to the story.
The movie plays out just as tense as a war room when your team is on the clock. Shrewd dealings and half truths abound in the world of an NFL GM, and the film does a great job showing how Costner juggles all of these while trying to please everyone on the biggest day of his career. A surprise Denis Leary sighting and the token nerdy intern flesh out a good supporting cast, and our "villain" is perfectly cast. His facial mannerisms superbly displayed the cock sure yet weak minded individual he was written to be.
If you're a football fan, you will probably find a lot to like here.
