Review of Draft Day (2014) by Christopher E — 16 Nov 2015
Draft Day is a film made for sports fans, and in that, I loved this movie. On the other hand, this movie struggles in keeping the casual viewer entertained, and supplies some unnecessary plot points.
This movie is led by an amazing actor in Kevin Costner, along with some great performances by our supporting actors. Kevin Costner brings a sense of realism to the movie, and he displays a firm, yet emotional performance. Jennifer Garner and Denis Leary also did great jobs, but it did feel like Jennifer Garner and Costner's love interest was forced. It felt like it was just there just to be there, and it felt like it created more chaos within the movie. Chadwick Boseman was also excellent in this movie, and I hope to continually see him in more future films. Overall, there was multiple strong performance in this movie, and it was definitely a positive for this movie.
The screenplay was actually pretty interesting, but will come off as slow and boring to most viewers. For those that truly love sports and are interested in every aspect of the game, this is the movie for you. This film dives deep into the chaos that ensues on Draft Day, and it grabs sports fans by the heart, and doesn't let go until the end. I found the screenplay as useful and it helped drive the story. It had comedic moments, along with some moments with heart and emotion.
The overall plot was interesting and fun, especially considering this movie takes place entirely in one day. The director and writers did an excellent job, and the editors did a good job of relaying the time of day within this movie.
In all, I'll keep this short and sweet. This movie was fun and interesting, and most people will at least find something good in this movie. The finale was intense and entertaining, and in the end, this is just a feel good movie. It's not your typical sports movie, as it's a little more sophisticated than that. It's a movie with comedy and heart, and is led by amazing actors. In all, this is a movie I proudly own on Blu-Ray.
