Dracula Untold's biggest issue is how serious it takes itself, and how by the numbers it feels like. The only character you can sympathize with is Vlad himself, that is until he turns into a vampire, and it tries so hard to be dark and joyless, that you aren't on board for the ride anymore.

That being said, Luke Evans does a great job with what he's given (the best thing about the movie for sure) and he makes this joyless, predictable adventure, watchable.
