Review of Dracula Untold (2014) by Ryan H — 09 Aug 2017
Combining a well-told story, creative action, and a surprisingly great lead performance from Luke Evans, Dracula Untold is a genuinely good film. Unfortunately, it doesn't really give us much time with the iconic deathless character, instead telling the story of how Dracula came to be.
Despite not giving us nearly enough of the monster himself, the origin story is actually well-told and thought out story of a man trying to resist the temptation of unimaginable power. The action set pieces are intense and entertaining despite the limitations of a PG-13 rating.
Once Vlad actually becomes Dracula, the film does its best to make up for not doing so sooner, and the result is delightfully brutal. The editing could be better, the script is good but not great, and the film as a whole can't compare to previous Dracula movies.
That being said, Dracula Untold is a criminally underrated film that simply didn't live up to expectations.
