Review of Dracula Untold (2014) by Tyler R — 04 Sep 2015
Imagine a world where Earth's Mightiest Villains...wait a minute. Well, this was (and apparently still is) the plan that started with Dracula Untold. And like any bad film, it spends a nice chunk of time setting up the sequels and spinoffs.
But for the sake of this review, let's focus on this film. Dracula, the horror icon, is brought into a new light this time. This time around, he is the anti-hero. Does it work? No, not really. And to be honest, everything outside of Luke Evans' performance is painfully dull.
The action is edited together with a mind numbing amount of cuts, rendering everything incomprehensible until the camera stops to show the carnage. Story wise, the film plods along with the buildup, then it takes a complete stop to tease the sequels.
After that ten minute scene, the film slowly chugs back up and continues to plod until one final tease before the credits roll. Acting wise, Luke Evans does a decent job with what he has, but it isn't much.
As for everyone else, no one holds their own. Visually, the film is shot on film, which is nice, but everything is so dark and dreary, there isn't anything to admire. And speaking of which, there isn't anything to admire, and with any luck, this series is dead.
