Review of Dracula Untold (2014) by Rock L — 23 May 2017
To be completely honest, I think the critics missed the ENTIRE point of this movie. Dracula Untold wasn't meant to show you a fierce, bloodthirsty monster that everyone knows by name. Hence the title of the movie, guys... really, is it that hard to figure out?
No, this movie is meant to portray something vastly different, something the movie industry's been neglecting about this world-renowned legend: That Vlad the Impaler was once an actual human. Vlad the Impaler, in Romanian history, was once the HUMAN Count of Wallachia (Romania didn't exist yet). Fun fact: Romania used to be 3 separate territories: Wallachia, Moldova, and Transylvania. There's the first place where the movie industry went wrong: Our fabled vampire is NOT from Transylvania, but rather, from Wallachia.
Like any good ruler, he wanted to protect his country from the Turkish threat, and he wanted to protect his only son from being abused by them. He himself was also abused by the Turks, hence why he REFUSED to give his son to them. He also refused to allow his people to suffer because of them. Of course, war broke out as a result.
Vlad knew he couldn't defeat the Turks without some help... he was desperate. So he sought out a vampire and made a deal. The reason he didn't want to drink human blood was so he'd eventually become human again. That obviously failed when his wife was on the verge of dying and he desperately needed strength. He was a vampire for the rest of his life... but he retained his human heart and behavior.
This is one of the few movies I'd watch time and time again. I can't wait for their sequel, and I hope it gets the ratings it truly deserves.
