Review of Dracula 2000 (2000) by Josh J — 26 Sep 2009
Vampires remain much in the same realm as zombies in that there really is no way to make them scary anymore. In lieu of making it scary, some opt to make these movies one of two things: fast paced and action packed, or dramatic and romanticized. This movie decides to make it neither of these things, instead going for some bizarre middle ground that never quite congeles into an actual movie.
The biblical ties are contrived, sure, but the real fault in this is that it never picks a tone and settles for it. Rather, it becomes a sloppy hodgepodge of psuedo-religious action-horror with a healthy dash of sex appeal. Sadly, the only thing it gets right is the sex appeal part; though how can you really go too wrong in that respect when you have Jeri Ryan, Jennifer Esposito and Gerard Butler all in one film? Those are three pretty sexy stars to have, so it kind of comes off as just resting on laurels.
In the end, it's harmless albeit terrible, but what else can one expect from a movie with its year of release in the title?
