Review of Dracula 2000 (2000) by Andreas O — 26 Aug 2010

It's the year 2000, centuries after Dracula had his reign. Van Helsing, who captured Dracula many years ago and is hiding him in a coffin past many security. After the security is breached, his coffin is stolen and he escapes, searching for the one who shares his blood.

Boring. The film was extremely boring, and by the end I was so happy it was over. It tried to be fun and sexy but it never succeeded because it was so dull and depressing. The origin of Dracula was very confusing, which made the ending confusing because it tied it all together. The moments that were potentially scary were letdown by the whole predictability. It failed to maintain consistency, rapidly building up tension for no reason, and the moments meant to frighten weren't scary because they had no tension leading up to them. The ending was just ridiculous. I understand somewhat of how he became Dracula, but the explanation given can no way make someone supernatural and invincible.

The plot was a modern adaption to the myth of many centuries ago. It takes the same basiuc concept, this time taking it to a modern level, which in no way helped it at all. The opening sequence was also confusing. Characters were created badly, and were all unlikeable. If the audience has no feeling for the characters, what can they expect from the entire film?

The acting was pretty bad. Gerrard Butler in his early acting days, he played Dracula. He pulled the role off okay, but he had more potential to make the role more enticing and scary but failed. The rest of the cast (lead and supporting) all were quite annoying, apart from three dead-sexy vixens.

Overall "Dracula 2000" is a dissapointing modern adaption that tries too hard to be fun and sexy when it fails on most levels. It has a confusing origin which doesn't help either. My rating is 2/5.
