Review of Dracula (1958) by Filmgrinder S — 10 Feb 2013
Hammer Horror's 2nd outing of re-imagining another Universal Monster takes them to Dracula. The same actors of Cushing and Lee paired again together. This time Lee has more lines as he plays the title character of Dracula. Cushing plays Van Helsing, Dracula's arch-nemesis. Much more graphic than it's previous incarnations, Horror of Dracula is entertaining enough in that it's interesting to see new life in the source material and in color too!
This too proved to be just as successful at the time as 'The Curse of Frankenstein' and even spawn a few sequels as well. It's certainly in no way better than Nosferatu, but Christopher Lee's interpretation of the Count is most fitting. Also the bevy of beauties in a Hammer Horror production began to show in this film. Valerie Gaunt bares enough cleavage as the Vampire Woman that bites Harker on the neck. Sad she had to be disposed of with a stake to the heart. Such a waste.
