Review of Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) by President P — 25 Jun 2013
In all honesty I really don't know how to describe this film. All I can say is I'm truly amazed that such a simple story could be so memorable and amazing to watch every time. Stanley Kubrick, to me at least, is one of the greatest directors of all time, and Dr. Strangelove proves that in the biggest way possible. In only a hour and a half Kubrick delivers a masterpiece and film that defines the Cold War and American cinema. Dr. Strangelove's story is simplistic, yet full of energy, emotion, and enjoyment. Following primarily three arcs that work extremely well together and are connected perfectly, Kubrick spares no time telling the story and putting dark comedy that works on a situation that at the time, and even today, was very serious.
On the subject of acting, Strangelove hits a grand slam. No matter how big or small there role each actor or actress delivers a great performance. However, all of them fail in comparison to Peter Sellers. Sellers plays three roles here, all of which are easily the most memorable. Playing both a RAF group captain, the president, and Dr. Strangelove himself, his performance is easily the most memorable; especially as Strangelove.
The writing from Kubrick, Southern, and George is simply nothing short of extraordinary. The dialogue produced is easily magnificent and believable for each character and situation. The same can also be said for Kubrick's direction; marvelous. The reason why Strangelove worked so well is that Kubrick put his all into it and produced one of the greatest satires of all time.
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is amazing simply because it makes a relatively simple story full of energy and makes it work so well to the point it becomes one of the greatest films produced. Whether you like Kubrick, Cold War era films, or film in general, Dr. Strangelove will leave a lasting memory of perfection.
