Review of Dr. No (1962) by Kj P — 12 Oct 2015
Terence Young's innovative classic spy adventure that brought Ian Flemings' British superspy James Bond to the big-screen for the first time, and introduced a charismatic, badass Sir Sean Connery in a smashing debut as the original 007.
The story concerns Bond being send to the island of Jamaica to investigate the mysterious murder of an agent compatriot. Bond teams up with CIA agent Felix Leiter, superbly played by the late Jack Lord, and enlist the help from native boat owner named Quarrel, nicely played John Kitzmiller, to take them to the island of Crab Key, there Bond encounters the sexy bikini wearing Honey Rider, compellingly played by the gorgeous Ursula Andess, she is so stunningly beautiful and makes one of the most memorable entrances in screen history as she rises out of the water like some Greek goddess, she set the standard for Bond beauties that follow in future films.
The island which is ruled by the nefarious Dr. No, played impressively by the late great character actor Joseph Wiseman, he is a half-Asian megalomaniac scientist with black steel robotic hands capable of crushing a bronze statuette, he is the first super villain of the atomic age, Dr.
No reveals that he is working for SPECTRE, a criminal organization bent on world domination, and he plans to destroy American rockets launched from Cape Canaveral with a secret atomic device he has created, now it's up to Bond to stop him.
There is no doubt that this film's strongest attribute is Connery's almost hypnotic infusing of the character with just the right blend of fearlessness and charisma. Let us not forget that it was the tall handsome Connery that made James Bond into a cultural icon.
This is a wonderful look back at the film that made James Bond into a worldwide phenomenon, and created the longest-running franchise in cinematic history. Highly Recommended.
