Review of Dr. No (1962) by Reece L — 07 Nov 2015
As a whole, Dr. No is competently made and well-acted, but the racial aspects are so ridiculously dated that they can't be overlooked. This is a film that includes both a black side-kick who exists solely to loudly exclaim "captain!", reference "local native superstitions", and provide exposition and a white man dressed up in yellow-face in order to portray an Asian villain.
For those reasons, this will continue to age poorly, and should already be a Bond entry that those in charge of the franchise look back on with contempt. It's a shame, really, because otherwise it's not a bad film, although it's relatively silly compared to the newer incarnations.
