Review of Dr. No (1962) by Daniel D — 13 Dec 2015
The first Bond movie truly has a lot going for it. I feel the 2 films that came right after it (From Russia With Love and Goldfinger) are better, however this film is still quite good in its own right.
Dr. No, while a good first Bond villain, is definitely no Auric Goldfinger, and Professor Dent is no Red Grant or Oddjob (in fact, he's not a brutish henchman at all, so I guess more power to that character in not having been a stereotypical henchman).
The theme song used for the title sequence was the James Bond theme mixed with some Caribbean instrumental or something like that, which is cool for starting a series, but more interesting uses of music for title sequences would come later on down the road.
It's also good to see Bond roughing it here: you see him walking barefoot and using basic stealth skills on the swamp in Dr. No's island. This raw interpretation of Bond likely influenced Craig's later take on the character.
So even though I only give it 4 stars because I feel there's better Bond films out there, I still highly recommend this film for those interested in going through the EON series.
