Review of Dr. No (1962) by Alex A — 20 Sep 2010
The original Bond remains one of the best. It's hard to believe it's now almost 50 years old, but it says a lot for its impact on popular culture that it spawned a series that is still going strong.
Of course a great fully formed character and a rich world packed with potential were already there in Ian Fleming's novels, but the combination of star Sean Connery and director Terence Young were also key in developing Bond as we know the character today.
Dr No showcases a subtler 007 than in later efforts, and there aren't many gadgets and wisecracks on display (which judging by the excesses of some later Bond films isn't particularly a bad thing), but Bond hit the ground running and this isn't far off being the finished article.
