Review of Downsizing (2017) by Lincoln K — 22 Dec 2017
This film is a disappointment from Alexander Payne, whose work I have liked in the past. The concept is interesting and I liked the first third or so which dealt with how Matt Damon was brought into this miniature world.
... but after that they dont really dwell on that anymore and its mostly all in the world. Then it becomes a movie about class differences and how immigrants are mistreated, with some really obvious racial stereotypes.
... and then it switches gears again and becomes a tale about environmental catastrophe and the end of the world.. It's too ambitious and the tonal shifts are so jarring they dont work... and much of the second half is just so boring that I found myself starting to doze off.
.. Damon plays it so blandly that its hard to even figure out what he thinks of anything that is happening to him. Probably the most disappointing film of the year.
