Review of Downsizing (2017) by Kevin S — 26 Dec 2017
This movie is about as mediocre as it gets. It's not just awful but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it either. The initial concept is somewhat interesting and could have led to something worth seeing.
SPOILERS. Instead, it's just a basic plot device to get the main character single and down-and-out. The plot really doesn't depend on the gimmick. It's not an integral part of the story after the initial shrinking.
And the ending is the opposite of what I think it should have been. He's been beaten down and his wife leaves him because she didn't think he was worth making a sacrifice for. Then, in the end, he's again not considered worth a sacrifice by the woman he loves.
Nobody really learns anything in the end. This is not the type of movie I expected from Alexander Payne. I'm not sure how he misfired so wildly but I hope the next one is aimed a bit higher.
