Review of Downsizing (2017) by Lynn H — 06 Jan 2018
Conceptually, downsizing should be a comedy. Several of the characters are amusing and well-acted. Realistically, it's a forced attempt to turn what began as a fun and whimsical film into a bizarrre claim that mankind will go extinct when global warming releases methane gases trapped in the artic ice.
(Seriously?) It's firmly anti-survivalist and doesn't miss a beat to deliver a few anti-wealthy life style lectures as well. The entire plot is obvious from the start and delivers the expected conclusion that mankind sucks.
Don't take your kids to the movie unless you want them to learn (unnecessarily) about the eight or ten types of "fucks", including "pity fucks". The writing is weak. The dialog is lame.
Even costuming is lousy. The only reason to see this movie is for the semi-fake Norwegian scenery.
