Review of Downsizing (2017) by Trini S — 08 Feb 2018
An interesting premise which dies a painful death as soon as Damon's character decides to actually downsize. A lot of trailers spoil the ending of films, this one didn't, because their isn't one, it just trails to no clear semblance of a narrative.
Nothing pays off in a satisfying way; the hints at possible conflict with regular sized people, the realisation of the crushing inequality in this supposed utopia, the references to methane and global warming going to wipe out humanity; all come to nothing.
There is also the litany of characters we are briefly and forgettably bombarded with, added to the lack of plot clarity, this leaves you feeling a shrugging nonchalance about their fates. Ultimately not helped by the dull lead character, Damon's Paul Safranek, leaves you wishing the film had followed Ngoc's valiant story of survival, instead of the humourless trudge of Paul's mild directionless existence.
