Review of Downsizing (2017) by Najd G — 01 Apr 2018
This movie is full of bizarre artistic choices, but none more curious than the major shift change in the final act.I don't understand why the most recent "thought experiment" movies continue to choose to abandon their premise for a new thought experiment midway through (or near the end) of the movie. "The Circle" did it, "What Happened to Monday" did it, and now "Downsizing" did it, too. The premise of this thought experiment was enough to carry a franchise of movies, but they traded it instead for a grandiose plot twist that didn't serve the characters or ultimately the plot.
Still, most of the movie was compelling. I just wish the writers had downsized their ambitions a bit and stuck to what made the first half of the movie so interesting. This could've been special.
