Review of Downsizing (2017) by John A — 27 Jan 2018
2/5- Really disappointing. I had high hopes for a film that stars Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig and Christoph Waltz. A Hollywood version of The Borrowers, a financially struggling man volunteers to join a ''growing'' community of shrunken people so that their wealth works out respectively much greater (e.
G. $150k worked out as $26 million in the downsized world) and they will have less affect on the environment as they use less resources. We get lots of Matt Damon looking sombre down the camera, inter-sliced with another "humorous incident".
Personally I felt a lot of the comedy moments didn't hit home and I got an inkling that the film makers were told to try and make it funnier in order to market it easier. The film seemed to be trying to say something meaningful about human consumption and sustainability but the message simply got lost in a plot that jumped illogically from point A to C.
A lot of the plot didn't even require for the characters to be small and the fact that they were seemed irrelevant. The film's stand out performer was in fact Hong Chau, who was able to convey both the best comedy moments and hard hitting emotions as her character struggled to help the needy, whilst having her own personal disadvantages.
In summary, an over long borefest. Give this one a miss.
