Review of Downsizing (2017) by Handy M — 31 Dec 2017
I really thought this would be a good movie. The previews made it look appealing and I loved the concept and exploring how everything being small would impact lives. The visuals also looked great. The first 15-20 minutes of the movie were well done, setting up the reasons to "get small" and how it affects the world as a whole and issues it raises: taxes, the economy, the environment etc.
SPOILER ALERT: I need to give some things away now. Then the movie takes a nosedive when Matt Damon's wife stands him up after he got irreversibly small. Now it's a tragedy after setting it up as a comedy or a lighthearted romcom at least.
Why use comedian Kristen Wiig to play a dramatic unfunny part? Dumb. So now Damon's small, alone, depressed and miserable. Then all sorts of disjointed people and things appear from everywhere and none of them become part of the whole.
His friend who got small previously never reappears. He's rich now but for some reason answers phones for phone sales. WHY? There are now so many subplot lines its ridiculous: global warming, environmental impact, political prisoners, class struggles, bunker mentality, hippie communes, ghettos, and even the deaths of a couple more people, not to mention the impending death of the entire civilization.
How stupid. Utterly muddled plot, super boring and tedious and depressing for the past 1 1/2 hrs, seemed like 3 hours.
