Review of Downsizing (2017) by Nicholas I — 20 Mar 2018
Downsizing isn't a very good movie. It has a great and original idea and buries it behind racist stereotypes, underdeveloped characters, random environmental themes and silly sight gags.
Downsizing starts off well and with promise. But after, the film turns into a pro-environment documentary rather than a dramedy. It moves our focus from developing the world and lives of downsized people and shifts to an environmental point of view. Which in turn, is totally.
Unnecessary.
Matt Damon isn't too bad but he plays a role we've seen before. The underachieving everyman. Christoph Waltz gives a good comedic performance as a wealthy playboy and is the movie's standout. Udo Kier is also another standout in this film. Not playing a vampire but a wealthy boatsman. But, Hong Chau is a racist Vietnamese stereotype and gives a horrible performance. Which harkens back to Mickey Rourke's in yellow-face speaking Chinese.
This movie was horrible and totally underdeveloped. Nothing really worked and tried to be biting social commentary but failed miserably.
