Review of Downloading Nancy (2008) by Archibald T — 22 Mar 2011
Tremendously depressing and highly disturbing film that was inspired by an actual story. I read about it after watching the movie because before the end credits pop up they have this disclaimer that reads 'Inspired by a true story' and they were right on the money with that one.
They did change a lot of it like the names and situation, but the fact that she meets someone over the internet to kill her wasn't changed. That stuff is fact and I found that shocking. As for the film itself, it is very bleak.
I wouldn't recommend it someone unless they've had their fill of disturbing films. Maria Bello's performance, however, is incredible. She does a very good job at playing a very difficult character and I applaud her for that alone.
Jason Patric was surprisingly good, and creepy. Rufus Sewell was outstanding as an emotionless husband. I liked the brutal honesty of the film, but wouldn't want to watch it again unless it's been a year or two later.
Overall, very different.
