Review of Downfall (2004) by Robert P — 28 Sep 2010
Mesmerizing realization of the last days of the Reich, almost all set in Hitler's bunker. This movie has an infernal quality and will surely stand as a testament to the terrible events of the end of the war, the final cruelty surely being the unnecessary prolonging of the fighting and the needless blood letting by Hitler and co.
Bruno Ganz as Hitler puts in a powerful performance as Hitler, more frightening thanks to the occasional glimpses of humanity and even in places tenderness shown to the young secretary whose eyes we witness events through.
There is real insight here into a disturbed mind at the end of his tether surrounded by collective madness.
