Review of Downfall (1997) by Andy O — 09 Sep 2009
Very much for the historian this film and the fact that it is in german is the first real attempt for many years for germans to look and analyse there own dark past. Bruno Ganz is scarily effective as hitler and the film transports you into the bunker in 1945 with a realism (in dialogue and mood rather than thankfully boom boom lol) that helps add to ones understanding of the event.
It's macabre content epitomized by the goebals family death scene is lightened up with black humor (a joke about the houses in berlin is very funny). furthermore this film is art it isnt a film one enjoys but watches to be cultured maybe a bit long, it in my opinion is worthy of its success.
