Review of Downfall (1997) by Paul C — 17 Jan 2010
When a film is made about historical events that you know the outcome of, that is basically set inside a bunker and is about Hitler, you know what an achievement it has been when it is so compelling and powerful to watch.
A story about Hitler's inner circle mainly from the POV of his secretaries and how they perceived the man. The film also encompasses the surroundings as well, with the effect the fall of Berlin had on various factions as well, such as the Generals, soldiers, Hitler Youth & the normal people.
Acting is superb throughout, Ganz giving an immense performance as Hitler, slowly falling apart. One minute showing a compassionate side to those he loved, the next ranting about where his troops were and how he had been betrayed.
Anyone who watches war films, must add this to their collection.
