Review of Downfall (1997) by Carlos A — 14 Mar 2010
Der Untergang, based on the book "Bis Zum Letzten Stunde" by Traudl Junge, Hitler's own personal assistant, depicts the last ten days of Adolf Hitler inside his bunker in Berlin. Bruno Ganz portrays the dictator in a performance that may be one of the best of the decade.
He plays a fallen Hitler, a person that does not recognize reality from fantasy; a person that feels betrayed when his generals do not obey him and that deep down, realizes that the war is lost, but refuses to accept it.
Der Untergang is by far the best Hitler bio film to date. And it should be treated just like that: a bio pic, about a fallen dictator refusing to let go all of his power.
