Review of Downfall (1997) by Rich T — 22 Nov 2010
Some very good cinematography, from the confines of the bunker to the urban battlefield. Goebelles' death is particularly well filmed. Ganz is a great leading man - his performance never struggles with the narrative and in that way the film is sublime.
Unfortunately, "Downfall" sometimes lacks inspiration, and it's very easy for a film like this to become a flop due to its incredible subject matter. There was too much on the screen, which made it very easy for the film to drift off into a typical war drama.
Nonetheless, Hirschbiegel must be commended for his attention to detail and harrowing scenescape.
