Review of Doubt (2008) by Kyle C — 17 Feb 2012
Doubt is the perfect vehicle for Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams, and Viola Davis. Their comradery on the screen is effortlessly fluid and real. It's hard to pick a standout from the cast, but I will say that Viola Davis creates a stir of emotions in her slight existence on camera.
Director Scott Rudin masterfully recreates the work of John Patrick Shanley by portraying a Catholic school riddled with uncertainty, gossip, self-righteousness, speculation, and, of course, doubt. When an allegation threatens to destroy the school and the lives of those involved, we see the visceral harm that a misguided sense of purpose can have. We also learn that doubt is real, common, and necessary.
