Review of Doubt (2008) by Nick P — 09 Dec 2012
Is a priest guilty of molesting one of the boys in his care? Or is he the victim of an over-zealous Head nun who can't bear the young priest's desire for the church to modernize and be more...er.
..forgiving? There's no easy solution to this slow-moving oscar-baiting period piece, so prepared to be a little disappointed by the lack of resolution. Performances are largely great (Hoffmann, Streep & even Adams carry the movie through some of its less eventful phases), but it's hard to forgive some of the pretentious camera shots (canted angles - really?? This is not a Danny Boyle film!) or some of the hammy physical effects - sudden gusts of wind, lights popping out and and stormy rain bang on cue, are a tad too cheezy to bear.
Still, it's hard not to be drawn in when you've got such great acting talent at the helm, and a script that at least doesn't pander to easy answers. Shame about Streep's dreadful speech at the end, though.
