Review of Doubt (2003) by Ernesto H — 09 Aug 2010
Doubt is one of those films that starts at a slow lull. The inciting incident happening at about 30 minutes in, which is not that uncommon with character based low-concept movies such as this one. The first act sets the tone with subtlety as it should.
Then it works its way up to a high energy between Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman that is riveting, truly the best part of the movie. It would be nearly perfect except it does not hit on all eight cylinders long enough.
The third has its great drama but I felt it should have been carried into the third, into that drama more dramatically, with even more energy. One thing to note is Phillip Seymour Hoffman incredible performance, hovering between subtle and detailed then energy and dramatic emotion.
All in all a great movie that could've been an outstanding one. Worth watching if you expect an enertaining performance.
