Review of Dot the I (2003) by Matt G — 11 Aug 2009
Wow, this is very much like a bad Almodovar rip-off. This film has some extremely thin writing for characters and dialogue and rather than subtly develop character and provide tension as well, we are given flat caricatures and a horrendous twist. The thrust of this film is all based upon one gimmick that keeps the audience in the dark until very close to the end, and then it patronizes them, insulting their intelligence and then a coda that adds another twist that is so frustrating and you will just throw up your hands and express how much of a waste of time the film was.
I personally feel bad for talented actor like Gael Garcia Bernal, who is so much more talented than this, but he has nothing to work with here. It's a shame because Bernal has worked with true artistic and talented auteurs including Inarritu, Salles, Almodovar, and Cuaron.
Seriously, avoid this film at all costs and watch Live Flesh instead. It is way more fun and doesn't take itself seriously, and it has a great performance by Javier Bardem and Pedro Almodovar makes a film that is absurd and silly, but works as a fun erotic thriller.
