Review of Dope (2015) by Ryan L — 06 Sep 2015
Dope is about 3 teens who live in a rough part of California and are obsessed with 90's hip hop culture. they encounter trouble with the wrong people and that's all I'm saying. that's all I knew going into this movie and that's all you should know.
This movie is amazing. original, hysterical, and ballsy as hell, this movie blew me away. there has never been another movie made like this.
All of the performances are amazing. Shameik Moore is perfect and so are his friends.
The script is absolute perfection. the writer really knew what these characters are and how they speak. The direction is also amazing in every way. really original and it sold the 90's vibe this movie threw around.
Now let's talk about the soundtrack. The soundtrack is one of the best of the year. one scene that sticks out involves a coked out horny chick and a bunch of drugs that shouldn't be used. Freak on a Leash by Korn accompanies this scene and my mouth dropped by the absolute perfection of this scene.
The message in this movie was pretty subtle until the end and I think it was handled very well. I enjoyed what it had to say without being preachy.
Overall I loved every second of this movie. the performances, writing, and directing were perfection. the soundtrack was astounding. what can I say, the movie was Dope!
