Review of Doomsday (2008) by Alexander Z — 21 Jan 2010
You know why Escape From New York or Mad Max were awesome? Because they were tongue in cheek. Because they had charismatic lead characters who were basically winking at the camera, in on the joke on how stupid it all was.
Doomsday pays homage to half a dozen movies, and while it is over the top, every character behaves as if this is normal reality, effectively eliminating any fun you may derive from seeing completely unbelievable scenarios unfold.
The setups last too long, the action sequences are frenetically shot, and it only serves to remind the viewer that he or she could simply watch any of the movies it rips off for a more rewarding experience.
