Review of Doom (2005) by Tom M — 09 Feb 2012
Doom:
I thought âDoomâ? was a lot better than the reputation that had preceded it as a box-office bomb. It probably had no real appeal to audiences that didnâ(TM)t play the game and had seen this kind of movie before, and probably disappointing the fans that love the âDoomâ? games by not taking it far enough. That said, itâ(TM)s a pretty paint-by-numbers science-gone-wrong bug hunt Sci-Fi adventure that has been done a lot better in other films that it takes its inspiration from. Just see âAlienâ?, âAliensâ?, âStarship Troopersâ? and the Resident Evil movies, and youâ(TM)ll feel like youâ(TM)ve been here before. The movie really underplays its strengths. Particularly the âfirst person shooterâ? perspective that the movie tries to emulate from the popular computer game that itâ(TM)s based on. Once this point of view starts very late in the movie, youâ(TM)ll be wishing all the combat had been done this way. And wasnâ(TM)t this supposed to be the whole point of a Doom movie in the first place?
