Review of Don't You Forget About Me (2010) by Allan C — 20 Aug 2010
I love the John Hughes films, but the reverence expressed by some of the people in the film is a bit over-the-top. However, there are lots of good observations, such as that Molly Ringwald is much more of a girl next door than say Jessica Alba and probably would not be a star nowadays, or how much more intelligent his teen films were compared to the teen films of today, such as "American Pie" or "Van Wilder".
It's a nice appreciation for a filmmaker who made stories that teens could actually identify with (more kids probably skipped school vs. being intimate with a pie). What very nearly ruins the film though is all the footage of the documentarians on their road trip to try and get an interview with Hughes.
That was just tedious and boring. I wanted to hear from the people who worked with Hughes or other filmmakers who were influenced by his work, not listen to the banter of a bunch of fanboys. And one minor thing that bugged me was that Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo is incorrectly named as "Richard Elfman Lead Singer of Oingo Boingo".
