Review of Don't Think Twice (2016) by Jenna I — 28 Jul 2016
This movie is best when it's focusing on the group dynamic- the petty jealously, the hidden competitiveness, the silent judgement, all juxtaposed with the comedic chemistry and lightheartedness on stage.
But where it drags is when it starts to get too precious, specifically with Gillian and Key's relationship, or too compassionate towards the group who, as the movie itself calls out, are essentially a group of adults in arrested development.
I used to do improv and I do still love it, and the biggest selling point of this movie is definitely recognizing stereotypes you know. But personally I would have rather it was more critical of what should be criticized.
.. as much as they like to bring up Del Close in the movie, the improv of today is in a totally different spirit and attitude- especially that fake go-team 'sincereity' that only lasts as long as you don't succeed- than it ever was before.
