Review of Don't Think Twice (2016) by Zachary M — 28 Aug 2016
So this one was interesting experience for me. Why? Well I've actually done improve for a few years and was interested in seeing this film. I'll start with what I liked, the movie raised so uncomfortable truths about improve. Like the fact there is no money in it and that you'll never get famous by doing it in the same way that being a standup or television comedian would let you. That being said, this movie was so far from perfect.
This movie has no subtlety to it. There are no real quite moments where you truly invest in these characters. Everyone starts off bitter, jealous, and petty. At no point did I feel like they were a "group" or 'family" like most improve troops are. By the end you feel for these people. Why are some of them still friends with each other after a fight in which big brides where burnt and where no resolution or development occurs.
This isn't someone who does improve seeing something and thinking they're 'misrepresenting us' it's bad screenwriting pure and simple. I'm given no reason to care for these sad, petty, whiny people in their lives which are only as bad as their self-loathing makes it. Try as you might, no amount of drama of life lessons will make me interested if I just don't care about the people. Try again.
