Review of Don't Look Now (1973) by Jerky S — 08 Feb 2013
Nicolas Roeg's incredible visual eye lends an undeniable atmosphere and constant dread to "Don't Look Now." There's never a moment that doesn't ooze with mystery, and the shift from domestic drama to psychological/supernatural horror is orchestrated perfectly.
Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland turn in great performances, as well as a perfectly crafted and controversial sex scene with a surprisingly deep undertone (rumor has it Christie and Sutherland weren't acting).
The build-up is slow, so those who prefer ghostly apparitions and potlergeist activity won't find it here, but "Don't Look Now" is a horror film, alright. It's one that builds with tension and suspense, leading up to a nerve-shattering climax that lingers.
Hitchcock would be proud.
