Review of Don't Look Now (1973) by Sarah G — 08 Oct 2009
In a word- unsettling. This isn't blood and guts horror but instead slow build suspense with a fair amount of creepy music and imagery tossed into the mix. The look and feel is like a solid Kubrick film, leads Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie perfectly capture a husband and wife in a grieving transitional phase as they travel to Venice after the death of their daughter.
Once in Venice all kinds of hell breaks loose. Wacky blind lady, religious element, over the top sex scene, a string of murders, and that damn red coat! The real star of the film is the Venice scenery, never has a city lent such a rich, cinematic verve to the proceedings.
