Review of Don't Look Now (1973) by Nathan C — 22 Jan 2009
I don't understand the appeal of this film in the slightest, or why so many people find it so scary. Don't Look Now is yet another overwrought artsy film that sells itself as "suspense" which really means "Too boring to be drama, too dull to be horror". The film is plagued by a dull story that occasionally sparks interest, a combination of beautiful and ugly camera work, and a disconnected style that leaves the viewer bored to tears. It really feels like someone thought of the beginning and the ending twist and then realized they had to pad out this middle. I don't care if it's "style" but the editing style helps to disrupt the flow before the film can build any sort of momentum, and the whole thing is so serious that one would think it's a documentary. For all of the praise the film receives, I can't help but feel like it's a film along the lines of Blair Witch, where a dull set up amplifies a scary ending. Unfortunately someone forgot that the beginning and middle have to be interesting.
Don't Look Now, but this movie's overrated.
