Review of Don't Breathe (2016) by David L — 12 Dec 2016
Well I've recently seen a film starring a deaf woman who's mission is to escape a psychological killer, and now I've seen another horror showcasing a sensory impairment. This time, 3 resident cat burglars target an older mans fortune in order to make their own dreams come true.
Little do they realise, until arrival, that their target is actually a blind guy who has inherited his money as compensation for the death of his daughter in a tragic road accident. Such a concept would no doubt make one want to root for the veteran to be victorious as the odds are clearly stacked against him on a 1:1 situation, never mind 3:1.
However, this is no ordinary OAP, but an army veteran who has strength, guile and the knowledge of his own home on his side. What's more, he also has a secret or two up his sleeve which gradually become unveiled bit by bit.
At first, you feel this movie could be over very quickly and it's nothing more than another cat and mouse chase. The trailer only gives a snippet of the main event though and this has more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing, making one ponder who is actually the hero, and who is the villain.
It's been a while since an original horror production was made, and to be fair, this is a solid attempt that betters the influx of remakes and psychological anticlimax's that are being released at the moment.
There's even a nasty scene involving an attempted artificial Insemination with a turkey baster that takes a turn for the worst - just for those that like that sort of thing. Definitely worth a watch, without being overly gory, overly scary, or overly over the top.
Cheesy, yes, and littered with all the normal horror cliche's, but somehow that just adds to the credibility in this instance.
