Review of Don't Breathe (2016) by Alex H — 17 Dec 2016
As soon as I saw the trailer for Don't Breathe I thought if they pulled off the concept successfully this film could really be quite special. Upon seeing the film... I wasn't disappointing. Following his gory reboot of the Evil Dead franchise; Fede Alvarez returns with a unique and disturbing take on the home invasion sub-genre with twists and turns that keep you biting your nails until you draw blood.
When it comes to modern horror, i'm not so in the know and have never cared too much to be. I've not seen any of the Blumhouse Productions and any modern horror i've seen is one that has been severely hyped by the press and people (It Follows and The Babadook).
So it's tremendously refreshing to watch a flick like this and be genuinely gripped and enthralled from beginning to end and unsure of where the film would go. Jane Levy and Dylan Minnette are beat to shit by the torture instilled by their captor and/or victim Stephen Lang and you wince with every bullet shot and punch thrown.
Yes, like all horror it has it's dumb clichés and tropes but Don't Breathe offers enough subversion that you are distracted and entranced by this claustrophobic throwback thrill ride to notice some of it's flaws.
Want to shit the bed? This will make you do so.
