Review of Don't Breathe (2016) by Zach W — 29 Oct 2016
In the land of the dark, the blind man is King.
Three teenagers, Alex, Rocky and Money live in a state of poverty in Detroit and choose to burglarize homes in order to get by. The trio is tipped off on an old blind man's home, rumored to be holding an incredibly large amount of money. Figuring him for an easy heist, they take him on, unknowing of the unrelenting danger they will face.
The horror here consisted of very few jump-scares and relied mainly on the build-up of tension in the audience, as scenes were often telegraphed, leaving the audience on the edges of their seats. Though there weren't very many lines in the film, the tension mostly came from the main characters, often accidentally, creating noise, which would alert the old man to their location.
The ending was done fantastically as it contributes a sense of wonder and lingering tension, possibly leaving room for a sequel.
