Review of Don't Breathe (2016) by Movie M — 15 May 2017
If you're looking for a sheer intense thriller, then "Don't Breathe" won't disappoint, it has everything it needs to be able to captivate its audience. A unique horror in the sense that it doesn't include ghosts or paranormal beings, what makes this movie stand out is the fact that it's able to terrify its audience while everything in this movie stays realistic, which I think can also add to the intensity and horror.
There were instances in this movie that keep you on the edge of your seat, and the plot and story of this movie was simple, but well executed. The acting from Dylan Minnette (Alex) and Jane Levy (Rocky) were great, and the standout performance of Stephen Lang (The Blind Man), who definitely had the toughest role in the film, was amazing.
This movie had everything going for it - and I was really excited for the second half of this movie while watching it, but unfortunately that's where it disappointed. It felt like the back half was just more of the same, nothing new really happens, sure the intensity is still there, but it just felt like the exact same scenes were taking place, just in different areas and under semi-different circumstances.
This is an hour and a half of a blind man trying to hunt down and kill invaders in his home. That is the spark notes version of this movie, and there wasn't anything really to tell me that its premise should be anything other than that.
Once again, this is another movie that I thought had potential to be great, but because of the lack to try something out of it's comfort zone, this movie plays it safe, and successfully makes a good movie.
Although I was hoping for more, "Don't Breathe" is still intense, and still carries some edge to it, and I will still say that it is worth watching if you're bored.
