Review of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) by Jason R — 02 Aug 2010
A decent movie with a good premise. It looks and feels really dated, but it has decent acting and there are a lot of really creepy scenes. The biggest issue, however, is that while many horror movies over explain to the point of it not being scary, this one doesn't explain enough. What are these creatures? Where did they come from? Who sealed them up? Why do they seem to know the old guy and refer to him by name? Why do they need anyone's spirit?
So much was left open to debate that it was hard to be scared due to how vague the monster was. You could come up with literally any justification and it would make sense since we aren't even given enough hints to piece anything together.
In the end it is worth a watch if you can find it, despite its' flaws.
