Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by Deven W — 07 Oct 2013
Having revisited this movie, I'm not sure it really deserves all the praise. It's visually stimulating and interesting but, ultimately, I don't think there's any substance or coherent meaning to it.
Honestly, I've always suspected that, to some extent, the reason this movie resonated with people is that they can relate to the protagonist's disaffection but I'm not sure that he has any real reason to be disaffected.
Also, the ending seems to intentionally cut off any attempt at reading coherent meaning or character into the earlier parts of the film so it feels a bit self-indulgent. Still worth watching but I suspect that the "Emperor isn't wearing any clothes," so to speak.
