Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by David L — 13 May 2014
My god, where do you start with this. I just wouldn't be able to explain the entire meaning of this if I tried and I've come across so many different explanations, so when asked, I'll just give the most simplified one.
I couldn't even decide if I liked it if not. My opinions on it fluctuated throughout the whole film, which could be a good thing, but also a frustrating one. Focused upon a young individual who seemingly has mental issues, we watch his life unfold following a near death experience, and how it effects the others around him.
Wrapped up in his own world of complex thoughts, and feelings, we see the paranormal activities that no one else does and how it all concludes in one amazing twist. Jam packed with an all star cast, many of whom would not have been so famous at the time, this gives it that professional feel that it needs in order to conquer such a complicated script.
It blends fantasy, and science fiction with religion and psychology in a baffling extravaganza from start to finish. So often a fan of the simple premise, this tested my resolve to the limit, and although somewhat nullified and bored at midpoints through this movie, I was keen to learn the true meaning afterwards.
Very much a one to watch for all audiences, but not necessarily one to watch again and again.
