Review of Donnie Darko (2001) by Jake Z — 10 Jun 2015
If Richard Kelly never makes a good movie again, at least we will always have Donnie Darko. A true cinematic gift and a timeless classic. It transcends mere filmmaking and becomes something altogether spiritually cathartic.
It's ideas are grand and it rarely, if ever, takes a wrong step forward. It's a modern masterpiece, so great and so flawless, actually, that Kelly was doomed to ever reach the same heights as a filmmaker once he made this.
At once deeply tragic, strangely hopeful, and offers something new with each viewing. There's simply nothing else out there quite like it.
