Review of Donnie Brasco (1997) by Rainer K — 08 Oct 2011
Another "early" Depp role were he doesn't do this silly, campy stuff all the time but plays a more naturalistic character. It's nice to see him act in such a way for a change.
Especially if it happens alongside the ever great Al Pacino.
What surprised me was, how Michael Madsen stole the show from both of them in a firm and menacing way.
The story seemed to be an inspiration for The Departed - only that it shows just one half of it - Depp as the snitch inside the Mafia organisation.
Donnie Brasco brings nothing new on the table regarding narration (well... it doesn't use voice-over which is something unusual for a gangster film^^) or style but, as mentioned, it has a slightly different aspect in it.
Solid gangster film, but I've seen too many of them already...
